Harvey’s MODUK is a celebration of the current UK Mod scene. Mod culture began in the late 1950s and throughout the years it has seen many variations around its original style. From the influence of Italian Jazz music through to the fashion influence of bands such as “The Who” and the Vespa and Lambretta scooters, the Mod Scene is still very prevalent.
Alongside Harvey’s interest in socioeconomics, the style of this subculture sparked his initial interest. The Mod culture has been described as “Clean living under difficult circumstances” which propelled Harvey to document this subculture as it currently exists in the UK and subsequently what the term Mod actually represents.
The word Mod is shorthand for modernist, which would indicate something new and exciting, even though it is based on something that first existed in the late 1950s. Due to this the images try to hold a timeless quality to them, with no real indications to a time period in which they were made.
